Often cited as the single most important figure in American filmmaking, D. W. Griffith (1875-1948) was also one of the most controversial figures in Hollywood history.

Griffith single-handedly elevated American film to world-class stature. As well, he forced Americans who thought of movies as light entertainment to perceive cinema as a serious art form with no direct corollary in literature or theatre.

High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging is a new form of photo processing where the final product can more closely match what is seen by the naked eye. In The Art of High Dynamic Range (HDR) Photography, a workshop taught by Elia Locardi, students will follow the entire photographic process from start to finish, highlighting some of the latest and most leading edge software packages. Topics will include new digital blending and detail enhancement techniques that allow photographers to push the boundaries of traditional imaging and take their work to the next level. Social Media’s effects on how photographers market themselves — and how to leverage social media to get established — will also be discussed. The 1170 murder of Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral by followers of King Henry II shook Christian Europe to its foundation, and set off reverberations still felt today. The nefarious deed also inspired two 20th Century works of art, the verse play by T.S. Eliot and Ildebrando Pizzetti’s opera. On the UCSD-TV program San Diego OperaTalk, San Diego Opera’s Nick Reveles provides a guided tour of “Murder in the Cathedral,” including its basis in Eliot’s play, the development of musical themes, and Pizzetti’s melding of words and music for maximum dramatic effect.
